John C. Hedges ’30

Body

JOHN HEDGES DIED in N.Y.C. June 19, 1994. He was elected an honorary class member soon after he put up the tablet in Jadwin in honor of his brother, Ben, along with a display of his Olympic medals and other trophies. John graduated from the Univ. of Virginia in 1934.

He worked for W. R. Grace for much of his career; served in the navy commanding a small vessel; and, after the war, returned to W. R. Grace. He spent 20 years in Panama as v.p. of Panama agencies, supervising cargo inspection of canal traffic. John never married and spent much of his retirement with Ben's children, who all remember with gratitude his kindness and optimism. He is survived by his nephew, B.V.D. Hedges Jr.; Ann; and Beth and her four daughters. The class extends its sympathy to the family.
