John A. Carter Jr. *56

Carter received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in 1953 and a Ph.D. in English from Princeton in 1956. His dissertation was on the influence of Victorian society on the novels of Charles Dickens.

After three years in the Army, Carter joined the faculty of the University of Virginia. In 1963, he went to Wake Forest, where he taught British and American literature, did research, and worked with colleagues in the interdisciplinary honors program. He served as chair of his department and president of the university senate, and sat on various academic committees. He also had been president of the Victorian Periodical Society.

Carter is survived by his wife, Lee, to whom he was married for nearly half a century, and several nieces and nephews. At the wedding, Carter’s best man was Dale F. Sprankle ’53 *55 (MFA, architecture).
