John Dana Archbold ’34
JOHN ARCHBOLD, who in 1979 donated a 950acre tract of rainforest on the Carribbean island of Dominica to The Nature Conservancy and who subsequently became a member of the Order of the British Empire (O~B.E.), died at his home in Virginia Nov. 29. He had not been well for several years, although last summer he was reported to be "happily scooting around on his wheels, attached to oxygen supply."
An heir to the Standard Oil of New Jersey fortune, John bought a plantation on Dominica in 1935, which he donated to Clemson Univ. in 1989, as the base of the John Archbold Center for Tropical Studies. He also owned and operated Foidease Farm, in Upperville, Va., his U.S. residence and the home of his registered herd of Holstein dairy cattle. In WWII, he served in the navy, assigned to the O.S.S. in Southeast Asia.
Among many other activities, John was a director emeritus of The Nature Conservancy, a trustee emeritus of Syracuse Univ., and a fellow of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
Surviving are four daughters and six grandchildren. To them, we offer our sincere sympathies.
