John Dougherty Burke ’38
JOHN DIED Oct. 11, 1993. John joined '48 from Brooklyn Polytechnic. He graduated with honors in economics. He joined Princeton's naval R.O.T.C. and served as a lieutenant in the Pacific under '38's honorary classmate, Admiral Bull Halsey.
While editing '38's 10year book, he met Betty Hourigan, Coogie Powers's sister, who he married.
John started playing the ad game at Erwin Wasey and then moved to Compton, where he was V.P. and creative director. Procter & Gamble was one of his big accounts.
A committed citizen, John gave much of himself to his church, his community, the Greenwich Arts Council, and Meals on Wheels. His five children knew him as a faithful provider. He never flinched through years of three, four, or even five tuitions. Son Brian '75 was the Tiger at football games in '73 and '74. He sailed at the Riverside Yacht Club. He remained a scholar, leaving a 1,000page book on Holy Roman Emperor Fredrich II, which he hoped to publish. He was a member of the board at the Princeton Club of N.Y.C. He planned '38's class trips and minireunions, and was elected class president at our 55th. We will miss generous and lovable John. Our prayers and sympathy go to Betty, their five children, and seven grandchildren.
