John Elmer Mufford ’44

Body

JOHN DIED Mar. 18, 1992, at his residence in Hampstead, N.C., at age 70. He had lived a good life. Pearl Harbor and the call to war prompted him to leave Princeton in Feb. 1942 and enter aviation cadet training in the Army Air Corps. Trained as a fighter pilot, he flew and instructed in P61 Black Widow night fighters in California, where he began his happy married life with jean. Discharged as a first lieutenant, he went east to R.P.I. and a degree in mechanical engineering. They settled in Norwalk, Conn., where John began a successful 34year career with the Nash Engineering Co. jean blessed him with a daughter, Elizabeth, and two sons, John Jr. and Clark. They had a wonderful life raising the family along Long Island Sound. With his children grown, John traded sailing for golf, and on retirement he moved to a course in North Carolina, He could play piano and clarinet by ear, and his eight grandchildren called him "G.P." for Grand Piano. jean wrote of her man, "He was a playmate extraordinaire to his children and grandchildren. He had a great laugh. He was a keeper."

Would that the Class had shared more of him. Our deepest sympathies to you, Jean, the family, and his many friends.
