JOHN EVANS JR., prominent Denver civic leader, died Mar. 16, 1993, after a long illness. His greatgrandfather John Evans was Colorado's first territorial governor and founded the Univ. of Denver. Succeeding generations served as its president, including our John from 195969.

He was with us through half of junior year, leaving to go into property management in Denver, but he remained a loyal supporter of Princeton and the class, while focusing on the Univ. of Denver. He was a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Div. and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and at Bastogne, where he was wounded. He was discharged a captain. He was a director of several Denver corporations and civic improvement organizations, which he served with distinction.

In 1937, he married Lucille Humphreys, the mother of his three children; they divorced in 1947. He married Mary Shaw Day in 1948, who died in 1969. In 1970, he married Martha McLendon, who died Feb. 9, 1993. In addition to daughters Lucy Hahn and Anne Hendricks and son John 111, he is survived by his sister, Anne Evans Freyer Sweeney.
