John F. Joline III ’47

Body

“Moose” Joline enjoyed a distinguished career in secondary-school education. He also was a great president of our class from 1982 to 1987.

After World War II service in the Navy,

he graduated in ’47 and soon married Jean Stebbins. They were rewarded with a cherished family: two children and two grandchildren.

Moose earned a master’s degree in Elizabethan literature at Wisconsin, taught at three private schools, and won a Fulbright fellowship to teach in England. During summers he led many of his students on treks through England and Europe.

After 14 years in the classroom he became headmaster of the Darrow School in New Lebanon, N.Y., and led it for another 14 years, including the period of student unrest in the 1960s and ’70s. He next served as executive director of the Edward John Noble Foundation in Manhattan, which made grants to schools to support environmental education and the arts. Moose retired following 42 years of professional service, and moved with Jean to their home in Duxbury, Mass.

Jean died in 1998. In 1999, Moose married Marjorie “Margie” Battle Bair. They vacationed in Duxbury and lived in Wayne, Pa., Moose’s boyhood hometown.

He died March 2, 2010, after a valiant battle against emphysema. Moose was greatly admired by his students and all who knew him. We send this celebration of his life, with affection, to Margie and the family.
