John Gaddis Anderson ’34

Body

JOHN ANDERSON, who was a rancher and real estate developer in and around Sheridan, Wyo., died March 5 in a nursing home in Powell, where a son, Martin B. Anderson, made his home. John and his wife, Tooney Richmond Phipps Anderson, owned and operated the 41 Ranch near Buffalo until Tooney's death in 1972.

John joined the Navy in 1941 and served as a deck officer until 1945, when he became the commanding officer of the USS PCE(R) 848 in the Southwest Pacific. He was a member of the American Legion, the Sheridan Elks Lodge, and a past president of the Wyoming Hereford Assoc. He was an avid skier, golfer, and tennis player, and belonged to the Sheridan Country Club. He attended our 40th and 50th reunions, noting that he had "a great time."

Surviving are four sons, including Martin, John H., Ben F., and Lincoln F. Anderson; a stepson, Lawrence C. Phipps '55; a stepdaughter, Richmond Phipps; a brother, Dr. Martin E. Anderson '35, of Denver; a sister, Margaret E. Lockhart, and 12 grandchildren. To them we offer our sincere sympathies.
