John Gilbert Winant ’45

Body

JOHN WINANT DIED Oct. 31, 1993 in Princeton, where his services were attended by classmates Farmer, Ramseur, Rees, and St. John. "Gov" prepared at Deerfield, joining his cousin Peter and following a long line of Winant graduates, including his distinguished father, John Gilbert '13, former ambassador to Great Britain and New Hampshire governor.

Before his extended illness, John had a distinguished career as a banker with Nail. City Bank (now Citibank), and Wellington & Co., in addition to several years as managing partner of Henderson, Harrison & Co.

John served in the army air corps in WWII and attracted international attention when he was captured by the Germans, not to be freed until the final days of the conflict. He then enrolled in Balliol College, Oxford, from which he graduated in 1947.

John is survived by his wife of 46 years, the former Janine Perret; by two sons, Dr. John G. Jr. '71 and M. Eppley; by a brother Rivington R. '47; by brother-inlaw and classmate Claude K. Williams; and by four grandchildren. To all in this distinguished family, with its generations of Princeton graduates, the class extends its deep sympathy.
