JOHN HOPKINS LEWIS, a mathematician, inventor, and illustrator, died Aug. 13, 1994. He was 84. He was born in China, the son of medical missionary parents. He got his bachelor's in mathematics at Washington and Jefferson College (Penn.), then got his master's from another university. He came to Princeton in 1938 and studied and worked there both in math and as an illustrator. In 1943, he joined the war effort: he taught applied math at Columbia, prepared training films, and invented several patentable devices with military applications. After the war, he entered the film business and was honored by election as a fellow in the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers. He is survived by his widow, Grace; two sons; a sister; and four grandchildren. To all his family and friends, we extend sincere condolences.
