John H. McCarthy ’35

Body

JOHN HOOPES "JOE" McCARTHY died Mar. 19, 1994, while traveling. He was buried with full military honors. Born in Duluth in 1912, Joe entered Princeton from Lawrenceville, but left at the end of sophomore year to complete his education at the Univ. of Minnesota. He belonged to Cannon Club and came back for most major reunions.

In Minneapolis and Duluth, he followed a career in grain merchandising for 23 years and as an investment manager with Paine Webber for 17 years. He was a director of the Duluth board of trade, a long-term member of the local planning board, and was active in the chamber of commerce and many other community activities. He coached hockey, enjoyed fishing, and deer hunting, but in later years escaped to Florida from the Minnesota winters. Joe was a naval lieutenant and gunnery officer in WWII, serving on an escort carrier in the Pacific.

He married Grace Carney in 1936, and he is survived by his widow, four sons, and two daughters. Twin sons died in 1951. Joe was the champion grandfather of the class, leaving 22 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He will be missed by many, and our class sends its sympathy to his family.
