JOHN H. WOLFENDEN, 87 years of age, died Dec. 27, 1989, in Hanover, N.H. He was born in 1902 in Failsworth, near Manchester, England. He attended Manchester Grammar School and Balliol College of Oxford Univ., where he received his undergraduate degree with top honors in chemistry. He came to Princeton in 1924 as a Procter Fellow for a period of one year. In 1925 he received a master's degree in chemistry and then returned to Balliol College as a lecturer. In 1928 he was promoted to fellow and tutor at Exeter College (Oxford), and until 1939 he served also on the Hebdomadal Council, which governs Oxford Univ. With the outbreak of WWII, he came to the U.S., where he served at the British Embassy in Washington and was honored there by the award of the U.S. Medal of Freedom with Bronze Palm. In 1947 he joined the faculty of Dartmouth College, where he served as New Hampshire Professor of Chemistry, departmental chairman, and subsequently as chairman of the Division of Sciences. Dartmouth awarded him an honorary doctorate in 1969 in addition to the many other scientific and academic honors received by him. Surviving him are his widow, Josephine; a son, Richard; a daughter, Susan; and four grandchildren. We extend sincere and much belated condolences to his loved ones.
