John J. McClean Jr. ’35

Body

JACK "MICKEY" McCLEAN DIED May 6, 1994, in Essex, Conn. Although he had recovered well from a serious stroke in 1985, his health had been declining for the past several months. Born on Feb. 24, 1913, Mickey joined the class from Poly Prep, in his native Brooklyn. During his upperclass years, he dined at Colonial Club and roomed with Bucky RulonMiller, whose early death ended one of the strongest of his many Princeton friendships.

After graduating with high honors in English, Mickey went into advertising, but was never entirely at ease in that field. After wartime service in the navy, he worked in a variety of occupations, notably a happy time as manager of the silver department at Tiffany's. He was also for many years a board member of East Side House, a charity active (despite its name) in the South Bronx.

His marriage to Lydia Emmet Sherwood lasted for 34 years, until she died in 1982. The class sends its condolences to their daughter, Mary, and to their son, Devereux '74.
