John died Jan. 29, 2000, in his native Buffalo after a lengthy illness.

A graduate of the Nichols School, John entered Princeton in 1942. He served as a sgt. in the Army fourth division, landing on D­Day at Utah Beach in Normandy and fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in Oct. 1945. With an AB in 1948 from Princeton, John then earned an MA at the U. of Buffalo school of social work. He became a senior parole officer with the New York State Parole Division, where he worked 34 years until he retired in 1986. A life member of the US Chess Federation and pres. of the University Club, John enjoyed history, photography, and genealogy.

John overcame throat cancer in 1978 and a heart attack in 1992. He was pres. of the New Voice Club of Niagara Frontier, and a director of the American Cancer Society, and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1986. He was also director of the Intl. Assn. of Laryngectomies.

With Mary Isabelle Cochrane, whom he married in 1949, he raised a son, George J., and three daughters, Mary C., Linda K. Reilly, and Barbara K. McFadden. Nine grandchildren and a sister, Barbara K. Dooley, also survive. The class extends its deepest sympathy to the family.
