John L. Welsh Jr. ’46

Body

John died Oct. 4, 1999, in Houston, where he had lived since 1949 with his wife, Phoebe, and their children, John L. III, Edward, Phoebe, and David.

Born in Philadelphia, John prepped at St. George's School, Newport, R.I. He majored in geology at Princeton, was pres. of Ivy Club, and capt. of the polo team. A Marine Air Corps lt. in the South Pacific from 1943-45, he won the Air Medal. In Houston, he first worked for Shell Oil, then became an independent operator and geologist in 1952.

A chair of St. John's School, John also served on many other Houston boards for hospitals, museums, and his church. He served as Princeton Area Alumni Club pres. and schools committeeman. He and Phoebe enjoyed hunting, fishing, golf, and tennis, and outings in Maine with children and numerous grandchildren.

We join the family in mourning the loss of a vigorously active and social family man and fine citizen.
