John Lee Ballin ’44

JOHN DIED after a brief illness Nov. 24, 1993, at his home, Greenfield Farm, in New London, N.H. He was 71. He was preceded in death earlier in the year by his beloved wife, Betty, who he had attended for many years following a severe stroke.

John joined '44 from Riverdale School in New York. He was a talented tennis player and became a member of Princeton's tennis team. He majored in politics; his club was Cloister Inn. Called to active duty in Aug. 1942, he served with the navy, marine corps, and coast guard in the Pacific theater. Discharged in 1946, he entered investment banking in N.Y.C. with Estabrook & Co., then became a partnet with Hannahs, Ballin & Lee.

He married Elizabeth Brooks in 1950. They settled in Montclair, N.J., where he was active in charity fundraising and the Princeton Alumni Assn. John moved to New London, N.H., in 1960. His business activities included a furniture production venture with Henry Pogue '44 and a return to the investment world. His civic interests embraced audit, budget, and treasurer positions with the New London school district, New London hospital, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, and King Ridge ski area. His retirement years focused on Betty and his children: John, Pamela, and Lawrence. To his family, Betty's mother, and brother Douglas '38 go our sorrow and deepest sympathies.
