John Logan Bailey ’45

Body

JOHN BAILEY died of a heart attack at his home in Pittsburgh, Pa. on June 5, 1989. He was 67.

Logs entered Princeton from Shady Side Academy along with Dr. Jack Fisher, Pete Glick, Dave Marshall and George Quay. He roomed at Libbey House and was a member of Campus Club until the completion of his sophomore year, when he departed for service with the Army Combat Engineers, 70th Division, in Germany. He was awarded the Bronze Star.

Logs taught at Grove City College in Pennsylvania from 1952-58, during which period he married the former Irene Johnson of Oakland, Calif. Thereafter, Logs joined the People's Natural Gas Company and performed loyal and effective service to that organization for almost 30 years as a civil engineer, retiring in 1985.

Throughout his life, Logs was a devoted member of his church, the First Presbyterian in downtown Pittsburgh, serving as a church elder and at one time as clerk of the session. He was also active in the youth camp of the church at Ligonier, Pa.

Logs is survived by Irene, by a daughter, Melanie Chafuen of Washington, D.C., a son, John Jr. of Pittsburgh, his mother and two grandchildren. Finally, he is survived by his brother Frank '48.

Logs had a unique ability to be an empathetic listener, and developed many close friends from his Class, church, and community. He will be missed. The Class extends its deep sympathy to the family.
