JOHN NEVIUS LUKENS DIED June 8, 1994. He was born in Burlington, N.J., Nov. 22, 1901, the son of the Rev. Frank Lukens '90. He prepared at Peddie. At Princeton, he was on freshman and lightweight crews and a member of Gateway. After graduation, he taught at the American Univ. in Beirut, where he met and married Joanna Mehan. Returning to Princeton, he earned a degree at the theological seminary. He then served as a pastor for churches in Portsmouth, Ohio, and Cincinnati and was awarded a doctor of divinity from Hanover College in Indiana. In 1948, he moved to Birmingham and became pastor of the Independence Presbyterian Church. He retired in 1967. He was active in efforts to relieve racial tensions during the troubled 1950s and '60s in Birmingham, and played a prominent part in church and community affairs.

John is survived by his widow, by daughters Carol Hall and Ruth Potter, and by son Dr. John Jr. '64. The class extends its sympathy to them.
