John Nelson Albro ’35
John Albro died on Apr. 15, 1989, of a heart attack while hosting a cocktail party. He had suffered a heart attack in May 1984. Johnny joined the Army in 1942, switched to the regular army in 1947, served in both WWII and the Korean War, and retired from the Army in July 1963 as the chief of staff of the 4th Transportation Command at Ft. Story, Va. He served on Gen. MacArthur's staff in Tokyo as a major in intelligence, was a graduate of the Army Command General Staff College, and had many military assignments. He was buried in Arlington Na¬tional Cemetery with full military honors.
Before he retired, John and his wife Mary built their first "permanent" home in Virginia on a tributary of the Chesapeake Bay and acquired a 22' cabin cruiser. They spent several weeks each summer cruising the bay and its rivers. Johnny was a charter member of the Virginia Beach Power Squadron and a member of the Virginia Beach Beautification Commission and the National Re¬tired Officers Assn. John and Mary traveled around the world twice. They went on the class trip to Norway and Denmark, and John attended our mini in Williamsburg. He loved Princeton and the class and regularly attended our major reunions. We have lost a loyal classmate.
Surviving are Mary, his wife of 52 years; a daughter, Dr. Katherine A. Houpt, of Ithaca, N.Y.; two sisters, Jo¬sephine Gomez, of Stuart, Fla., and Alice Meyer, of Sayre, Penn.; and two grandchildren. To them the Class of 1935 extends its deepest sympathy.
