John O. Ehrenclou ’51

John was born July 4, 1930, the son of doctors Alfred H. and Cora Morris Ehrenclou of New York and Camden, S.C.

A graduate of The Hill School, he majored in economics at Princeton, was a member of the Pre-Law Society, the Chapel Choir, Flying Club, and Cap and Gown, and roomed with Sandy Halsey, Ash Harvey, and Chuck Highley. His 1951 marriage to Mimi Winston ended in divorce.

John served in the 82nd Airborne Division after graduation; at the time of his death he was a retired lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve, JAG Corps.

He graduated from Harvard Law School in 1956. He was an associate at Pitney, Hardin & Kip in Newark from 1956 to 1959 and general partner at Gude, Winmill-Vanden Broeck, a division of Wall Street brokers Prescott, Merrill, Turben & Co. In later years he served as a public defender in Kershaw County, S.C., and as city attorney of Camden.

John died Aug. 6, 2010, in Columbia, S.C. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Alterman Ehrenclou; his daughter, Lynn Blagden; sons John, James, Jesse, Hennen, and William; eight grandchildren; a great-grandson; his brother, Alfred ’49; and sisters Jessie Browne and Alice Poole.
