John died in Stamford, Conn., on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 23, 2023.

He came to us from Binghamton (N.Y.) Central High School. At Princeton, he majored in architecture, was a member of the national champion fencing team in 1961, and served as secretary of Cottage Club.

Following graduation, he served two years in the Navy and earned a master’s degree in architecture from Harvard in 1966. He was a partner in the design firm Chermayeff & Geismar in New York City for more than 30 years, where he oversaw the firm’s design of large-scale public exhibitions and took great pride in developing a closeness between his work and its location, culture, and history. He produced many exhibits, including at the Ellis Island Immigration Museum and the Statue of Liberty in New York, the Smithsonian in Washington, and the Kennedy and Truman presidential libraries.

John was loved for his sense of humor and fun and his sincerity, thoughtfulness, and hard work.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Virginia; children Patrick ’95, Sara, and Michael; and two grandchildren. The class extends its condolences to all.
