John P. Maguire Jr. ’41

Jack died March 11, 2011, in Creve Coeur, Mo.  

He transferred to Princeton from Babson Institute in 1938 and majored in the School of Public and International Affairs, graduating with honors.

He was on the JV basketball team and the varsity debate panel, was active in Whig-Clio, served as manager of the Student Sandwich Agency, and was president of Tiger Inn.

Jack graduated from Yale Law School in 1943 and joined the New York law firm of Cravath, Swain & Moore. He was with them from 1943 to 1950 and from 1952 to 1954 with two years in between working for Forbes Publishing Co. as vice president and director.

He was next employed by General Dynamics Corp. as assistant general counsel from 1954 to 1960, leaving to become secretary and general counsel of Texas Butadine & Chemical Corp. When it was sold to Sinclair Oil, he returned to General Dynamics as vice president and secretary, retiring in 1987.

With his son, Peter, Jack started the firm of J.P. Maguire Investment Advisors, which later merged with Fiduciary Asset Management.

Jack’s wife of 64 years, Mary-Emily Jones Maguire, and his son, Peter ’77, predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter, Joan Maguire ’81.
