John Patterson Coyle ’37

John died Oct. 15, 2009. He was a member of our class until his junior year, when he transferred to Antioch College.  

He prepared for Princeton at Roosevelt High School in Yonkers, N.Y. At Princeton he was on the swimming team and crew and was a member of the Camera Club.

After graduating from Antioch, John went into metallurgical research and was recognized as a scientific analyst. During World War II he worked with the Navy’s Anti-Submarine Operations Research Group and for its Air-Operations Research Group.

After completing his military service, he married and later was awarded the Young Authors Prize in 1944 for his paper on “The Extraction of Indium from Lead-Tin Bullion.” He belonged to the Washington Association of Scientists, the Electrochemical Society, and the American Society of Metals.

Following his years at Princeton, John seemed to fade from our ranks. Nevertheless, we express our sympathy to his family and friends and remember his years with ’37.
