Body

JOHN PAUL CHUBET III ("Pop" to some), a student athlete in the fullest sensefootball, basketball, and baseball (with AllState honors) and an honor student at Exeter (voted "most optimistic") and Princeton, died Mar. 20, 1993, in Baltimore, after a yearlong battle with lung cancer. In his early business years, he worked for Roebling Steel and J.&J., after which he joined Hightstown Rug Co. as a salesman, later rising to C.E.O. After selling the company in 1963 for the stockholders, he became a soughtafter office interior consultant.

Upon graduation, he married Margaret Davison of Princeton. Two of their three children, Margaret Van Cott and Thomas D., survive. Peggy died in 1962 and Joseph (born in 1943), a "blue baby," died in 1982, far outliving his life expectancy through sheer determination and multiple interests. John married Marjorie Whitworth in 1975, and she died three years later, In 1989, he married Katharine Knapp DeVilliers. They lived in Baltimore and at the Ocean Reef Club, Fla. Kitty made John very happy and devotedly cared for him in his yearlong illness.

The Class has lost a man of straightforward loyalty and lasting friendships. The Class extends its deep sympathies to Margo, Tom, Kitty, John's sister Helen Weisul, his brother Bernard, and two grandsons, John Turmas and Charles Davison Chubet.
