John Philip Axtell ’42
JOHN DIED Jan. 2, 1994, in White Plains, N.Y. He retired from the Scarsdale Natl. Bank in 1982, where he had been a V.P. in the trust department for most of his career.
John graduated from Exeter. At Princeton, he majored in history, graduating cum laude. He was also a member of Terrace Club. He spent nearly four years in the army quartermaster corps during the war, in the Caribbean theater, ending as a first lieutenant.
John took great joy in learning and books. His recreation was travelon foot, bicycle, and skis, here and abroad. But throughout his life, his main interests were combating the injustices of racism, poverty, and war, and bringing sunshine into the political process. He served as president of Planned Parenthood of Westchester/ Rockland, Student Transfer Education Plan, and was a trustee of the YWC.A. of White Plains. He was a board member of the Scarsdale League of Women Voters and Scarsdale Fair Housing, among others.
John is survived by his widow, Julia; his sons, John and Daniel; his daughters, Ann and Sarah; and his five grandchildren. The class extends its most profound sympathy to them.
