John Philip Sousa III ’36
JOHN DIED Jan. 2, 1990, in N.Y.C. He was born Oct. 22, 1913, the son of John Philip Sousa Jr. '04 and Eileen Adams Sousa.
He prepared at the Deane School in Santa Barbara, Calif. At Princeton he majored in English, graduated cum laude, and was a member of Cannon Club.
He spent his early business life with Carl Byoir and Associates, NBC, and 20th Century-Fox. He was with Time, Inc., from 1942 until his retirement in 1971. While there, he held successive important positions with TIME magazine, FORTUNE, and Time-Life Books. He also for many years managed his grandfather's interests, through John Philip Sousa, Inc.
Some years ago, John served as vice chairman of the New York State Citizens' Committee for public schools, a nonprofit organization to help the more than 1,000 communities throughout the state.
John loved music, writing, photography and traveling. He published two books, MY FAMILY, RIGHT OR WRONG and THE PSYCHOPATHIC DOG.
John's wife Joy died in 1969. He is survived by a son, John Philip Sousa IV, and a sister, Nancy Young.
John was an extremely talented person in many fields. Always friendly and considerate, he will be missed by his many friends in the Class.
