JOHNNY CARTER, referred to by the Knoxville (Tenn.) NEWSSENTINEL as "a prominent real estate official," died Jan. 3, 1993, at his home. A service was held Jan. 6 at Sr. John's Cathedral.

Johnny was born June 29, 1911, in Knoxville. He prepared at Culver and Lawrenceville. In college he was V.P. of Court Club.

After college, Johnny was with the Appalachian Mills Co. until he entered the Navy, where he served on troop transports in the Pacific and on the Murmansk run. He left as a lieutenant commander.

Later, Johnny was president of the Van Gelder Glass Co. and still later V.P. and director of the Knoxville JOURNAL. In 1957, he established the real estate firm of John P. Carter Co., Inc., now one of Knoxville's oldest firms, of which his daughter Diana Carter Samples is now president. Johnny was very active in community affairs.

On Oct. 9, 1937, Johnny married Eleanor Burwell Lutz. She died many years ago. Later he married Eleanor Lloyd Keener, who also predeceased him. In addition to his daughter, he is survived by a stepson and daughterin-law, Rear Adm. and Mrs. Bruce Keener III, and by two sisters, Alice Todd and Bettie Ramsey. The Class of '33 expresses its deep sympathy to Diana and all the family.
