John R. Carnochan ’31

Body

John R. Carnochan, an outstanding insurance man, died Feb. 19, 1995, in Maine. He was born in Princeton and prepared at Lawrenceville. In college, he was on the championship lacrosse ream and was a member of Elm Club.

After graduation, he worked for Equitable Life Insurance Society in Atlanta, then Syracuse, N.Y., but moved to Portland, Maine, in 1936. He took time out to join the Army for three years during WWII, earning three battle stars and retiring as captain. After the war, he joined Union Mutual Life Insurance Co., where he worked his way up to sr. v.p., retiring in l 969. But not for long — in 1971, he went to Morse, Payson & Noyes Life, Inc. for eight years, becoming president.

John loved golf and was president and secretary of Maine Seniors Golf Assn. Yet he gave generously of himself, serving in many community and church organizations,

John's marriage to Dorothy Findlay in 1939 lasted 55 years. Dorothy died in Sept. 1994. John was easy to talk with, no matter with whom, scrupulous in his record keeping, even had his income taxes done before he died. While his eyesight was fading, canceling his golf, he retained his sense of humor.

He is survived by a son John F. in Larchmont, N.Y., a sister Cathleen Farr, and two granddaughters. To them the class extends its sympathy.
