John R. Fales ’37

Body

SUPERB OCEANSAILING racer and yacht builder Johnny Fales died July 20, 1993, after having been on dialysis for three years, leaving his wife of 55 years, Barbara; son Richmond; daughters Nancy and Eleanor; and six grandchildren.

After football, hockey, soccer, and dramatics at Moses Brown, Johnny majored in psychology at Princeton. He was a member of the intercollegiate sailing team, freshman crew, Triangle Club, and Colonial. He took a business administration degree at Babson Institute and then became owner of the Rhode Dispensers Co., providing automatic soft drink and food equipment. He had a short tour in the navy as an ensign before 1947 and was president of the Princeton Club of R.I. in 1954.

After 23 years, he turned to Fales Yacht Sales and built sailboats and motor sailers. He also built and ran a 350slip marina in the Old F. T. Boat Harbor at Melville, Newport. He was commodore of the Off Soundings Club and 2000 Club member of the Cruising Club of America, Walkers Island Yacht Club, and former member of the New York Yacht Club and eight other yacht clubs. In 1956, his 41foot yawl, WHISKER, was presented the Cygnet Cup from the New York Yacht Club given to the yacht, of any size, with the most outstanding record during the New York Yacht Club Cruise. One year, he was third out of 31 boats in the ensign title sailing at the Larchmont Yacht Club, with Tom Potter fourth.

All our sympathies go to Barbara and the rest of the family.
