At the age of 92, John died Oct. 24, 2024, in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.
Born Jan. 24, 1932, in Reading, Pa., John graduated from the University of California, Berkeley in 1953 and received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton in 1959. John Wheeler was his adviser.
At Bell Telephone Laboratories, John became head of the theoretical physics and solid-state spectroscopy departments. His research led to a breakthrough in radar technology that is used today in the fields of lasers and seismography. In 1988, he was appointed professor of physics and mathematics at the University of Florida. His primary research interests resulted in the invention of coherent states and development of the theory of affine quantization.
John served on the physics advisory panel of the National Science Foundation and was editor of the Journal of Mathematical Physics, president of the International Association of Mathematical Physics, and associate secretary-general of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics. He was a foreign member of the Royal Norwegian Society of Sciences and Letters and received Norway’s Onsager Medal.
Predeceased by his wife, Agnes, and his daughter Karol, John is survived by his children Jennifer, John, Kim, and Katherine; and his former wife, Robertha.
