John R. McCune ’48

JOHN R. MCCUNF V DIED unexpectedly Aug. 12, 1993, at his vacation home in Santa Fe.

A native of Pittsburgh, John had been a distinguished figure in Oklahoma City for over 30 years. A Republican, he served as a state senator for 20 years and had been minority floor leader and minority whip. Respected on both sides of the aisle as a man of integrity who voted his conscience, his commitment to public service encompassed a wide spectrum of organizations. Many were education and healthrelated, and he was also very involved with prisoner rehabilitation, sponsoring a prison emergency credits law, which established an early release of inmates. He held an M.A. in corrections from Notre Dame. John was a graduate of the Hill School, after attending Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh and joined '48 with four others from that school Tim Mahon, Dee Ray, Ed Sipe, and Jonathan Whetzel. Due to his WWII service in the naval reserve, he graduated in 1950. He was a member of Terrace, the Glee Club, and the Tigertones.

John is survived by Nancy, his wife of 40 years; by Five children, Sarah, John VI, Molly, Laurie, and Carrie; and by 13 grandchildren. To all of them the class extends its deepest sympathy.
