John R. Smart Jr. ’52

Jack died Aug. 12, 2009, in Evanston, Ill.

He came to Princeton from Lawrenceville, where he played varsity football, earning a letter in two years. At Princeton he majored in modern languages. He then studied French in Switzerland. When he was drafted, his language skills led to an assignment in Army Intelligence in Germany.

Shortly after returning to his hometown of Evanston, he gravitated to the commodities business, where he spent the rest of his career as a trader and member of the Chicago Board of Trade.

In the Book of Our History, Jack reminisced that he had attended the 25th reunion and still felt closely attached to Princeton. He enjoyed tennis, golf, swimming, and later, walking.

Jack is survived by a son, John R. Smart; three grandsons; and his second wife, Kathryn Gallagher Smart, whom he married in 1989. His Lawrenceville memorial mourned him as a loving family man.
