John Ross Highland ’63

Body

JOHN, AN ATTORNEY with a solo practice in Chesterton and Valparaiso, Ind., died of a heart attack Mar. 16, 1992. Just after attending our 25th reunion, he received a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, and the disease ran a rapid course.

A powerfully built man blessed with perpetual affability, John was an avid gardener, gourmet cook, camper, and fisherman. He and his wife, Martha, who had known each other since they were teenagers, happily operated what she called a "maandpa" law practice. John was a past president of the Porter County Bar Assn. At the time of his death, he was looking into becoming a mediator, because of his decreased mobility.

John came to Princeton from Hammond, Ind., majored in history, played varsity football, and ate at Cannon Club. After college he went to Indiana Univ. for a law degree and then was a Marine Corps lawyer.

The Class extends it deepest sympathy to Martha; to their three daughters, Kristin, a medical student at Indiana university, Laura, a recent graduate of Ball State, and Ashlee, who is studying business at LU.; and to John's mother, Mrs. Janet Highland.
