John died of cancer April 10, 2025, in Seattle.
Born Jan. 25, 1942, in Glasgow, Mont., John earned his B.S. from Gonzaga University in 1963 and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton in 1967. He was a graduate fellow of the Textile Research Institute in Princeton, and a graduate fellow of the Cardiovascular Institute, University of California, San Francisco.
John joined the Boeing Co. in 1968 as a research engineer. During his 37-year career, John served as vice president and general manager of the 747/767/777 programs for Boeing Commercial Airplanes and was the senior executive responsible for the Boeing facility in Everett, Wash. He managed the development of composite materials, processes, and design concepts used in primary structural applications on the 777 and 787 aircraft. He was responsible for the delivery of Boeing’s widebody aircraft to airlines around the world.
After retiring, John was a consultant for the Boeing Senior Advisory Group and a founding member of the Future of Flight Foundation. He served on the board of trustees of the Textile Research Institute, and on the Visiting Committee of the University of Washington’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
John is survived by his wife, Celeste; sons Anthony, Mark, David, and Steven; and eight grandchildren.
