John Thompson Dorrance Jr. ’41
Jack died at his home, in Bryn Mawr, Penn., of an apparent heart attack on Apr. 9, 1989. He retired in 1984 as chairman of Campbell Soup Co., for which he had worked since 1946. After retiring, he remained active with the company as chairman of the board's executive committee. He was also engaged in many philanthropic and civic organizations in Philadelphia. Jack served his company's employees as well as his stockholders: his was one of the first large companies to provide on-site daycare centers and to give extensive advance notice of plant closings.
Jack came to Princeton from St. George School, majored in geology, and was a member of Colonial Club. Upon graduation, he joined the Signal Corps, serving in China and rising from private to captain.
He is survived by his widow, Diana Rogers Dripps (the widow of Robert D. Dripps ’32), three sons, two daughters, and six grandchildren. To these the class offers its sympathy in our shared loss.
