John Von Arnold ’44
JOHN DIED in NYC June 22, 1993. He had been seriously burdened in his later years by the effects of a stroke that left him partially paralyzed. He came to Princeton from the Riverdale Country Day School in NYC. He had shown promise as a fencer at Riverdale, but at Princeton he became truly accomplished in the sport, captaining the fencing team his senior year and serving as president of the Fencing Assn. He majored in politics. His club was Key and Seal. He graduated in 1943, then entered the Navy and served as a gunnery officer on light cruisers, seeing almost two years of sea duty. John was a It. j.g. at discharge in 1946. He pursued a career in public relations (initially with R. H. Macy, then with Wanamakers and Henry Strauss). John was an early proponent of audiovisual techniques in that field. He took his talents to the United Nations, serving there as a communications consultant. He left the U.N. in the early 1980s to open his own business as an audiovisual writer and consultant. He enjoyed bridge and tropical fish. He is survived by his second wife, Cecilia von Arnold nee Soemer, and their three children: sons Nicholas and Jeremy and daughter Elizabeth. To his family and friends we extend our heartfelt sympathies.
