JOHN W. HALDERMAN, one of the company of "founding fathers" of the United Nations, died Aug. 1, 1989, at age 81. He was born in Astoria, Ore., on Dec. 5, 1907. He earned bachelor's degrees in both arts and literary laws at the Univ. of Oregon, pursued graduate level studies at Princeton in the Dept. of Politics during the academic year 193637, and then joined the Dept. of State in Washington. During his 23 years there and with the Foreign Service, he participated in the formalization of the U.N. Charter, accompanied Eleanor Roosevelt to the first meeting in Geneva of the Commission on Human Rights, and took part in numerous major international diplomatic meetings and State Dept. posts of high significance. In 1960 he went to Duke Univ. as a senior associate at the now inactive World Rule of Law Center. He retired in 1972 but was soon named a scholarinresidence at Duke's School of Law, where he remained active for several more years, He is survived by his widow, Eleanor, and a son, Charles. it is with sincere regret that these words of memorial tribute to a great statesmandiplomat are offered at so late a date.
