John Wingo Knowles ’39

Body

RETIRED LAWYER and jurist, Wingo died Sept. 25, 1993, in Richmond, where he had lived all his life. In Richmond, he spent almost 17 years on the Henrico County Circuit Court bench before retiring in 1977. Wingo earned his L.L.B. at the Univ. of Virginia in 1948. He then embarked on a law career leading to the state attorney general's office and finally to the 10th judicial circuit of Richmond and Henrico County In WWII, Wingo served in Europe and the Philippines as a It. col. in the field artillery.

In retirement, he was able to pursue his lifetime hobbies, hunting and fishing, but a chronic back ailment curtailed his golf, except for putting and chipping. He was, however, always prepared to sit with six grandchildren "on call," as he expressed it.

Wingo's wife, Mary Alice, died in 1987. They had three sons, Peter, John, and David, who survive. We extend to them our deep sympathy.
