Joseph Condon Hoopes ’42

Body

JOE DIED of heart failure on Aug. 20, 1993, in Skagway, Alaska, while he and Betty, his wife of more than 50 years, were on a cruise.

Joe prepared for Princeton at Exeter. He majored in chemical engineering and was a member of Tower. Joining DuPont after graduation, he was assigned to the Manhattan Project (Abomb). After the war, he worked briefly for Textile Fibres in sales for Orlon. The latter part of his career was spent as marketing manager for field distribution of freon and valclene in the organic chemicals division.

He and Betty had lived in Wilmington, Del., since 1942. An accomplished golfer, Joe played in many tournaments and was a member of the U.S. Senior Golf Assn. He was also on the board of the Delaware Center for Horticulture and the West End Neighborhood House in Wilmington. Always a dedicated Princetonian, Joe was a regular participant in class gatherings.

TO his widow, Betty; his children, Joseph, Jr., Tibbie, Ruthie, and Holly; and to his five grandchildren, the class extends its most sincere sympathies.
