Joseph Garneau Ringwalt Jr. ’38

Joe Ringwalt died Feb. 22, 2009, in Peterborough, N.H. He had moved there from Greenwich, Conn., by way of Dorset, Vt. He spent most of his life in Greenwich.

Joe came to Princeton from Riverdale Country School. At Princeton he majored in modern languages, served on the Bric-a-Brac board, and was president of Key and Seal Club. During all four years, Joe roomed with LeGrand Gould.

After graduation, Joe went to Harvard Business School and then spent his career with the Joseph Garneau Co., an importing firm founded by his father. Joe headed the company until his retirement.

During World War II, as a member of the Army Air Corps, Joe taught flying at the Columbus, Miss., base.

Joe was married to Jean Hathaway, who died in 1990. He is survived by their three children, Barbara Ringwalt, Malcolm Ringwalt, and Sharmon Kelly; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a sister, Mary Woodworth. To all of Joe’s family, the class extends deepest sympathy.
