Joseph Inskeep Cunningham ’33
JOE CUNNINGHAM died at home in Watertown, Conn. ' on Mar. 28, 1993. A memorial service was held Mar. 30 a, the First Congregational Church in Watertown.
Joe was born Apr. 13, 1911, in Moorefield, W.Va., and later moved to Cumberland, Md. He prepared at Mercersburg. In college, he was a member of Cloister Inn and roomed with Jim Wilson.
After college, Joe got an M.A. degree from Harvard and began a lifelong career as a prep school teacher of foreign languages, first at Northwood School, and then, from 1937 until retirement, at the Taft School.
During WWII, he served in the Army Signal Intelligence Service in the Pacific, receiving many decorations.
At Taft, Joe had many roles. In addition to serving as head of the modern language department, he had been director of admissions, dean, and assistant headmaster. In a tribute paid to him, he was described as "the heart and soul of Taft."
On June 12, 1947, Joe married Elizabeth Young in Watertown. She survives him. They had two children, Susan Wofford, who also survives, and William S., who died 15 years ago.
The Class of'33 takes great pride in Joe Cunningham's life and work, and extends its sympathy to his family in our mutual loss.
