Joe died May 16, 2025, in Ann Arbor, Mich., from natural causes.

Born April 15, 1938, in New York City, he earned his undergraduate degree from MIT in 1960 and his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton in 1964, with a focus on atomic physics.

Joe served on the faculties of Texas A&M, Cambridge University, and Michigan State. He became a theoretical research scientist at Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory in New Mexico before moving to Ann Arbor to work at the nuclear physics company KMS Fusion. His final work years were at Ford Motor Co. as a research engineer in the software/hardware department where, among other things, he developed software to model crumple zones on cars.

Having learned Latin during high school, Joe sang in the Gregorian chant choir at MIT and participated in church choirs in every parish he joined. Throughout the 1980s, he sang with the University of Michigan Choral Union while joining the choir at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

Joe is survived by his wife of 41 years, Kathleen; and his children, Joseph and Anne.
