Joseph K. Cass III ’37

ENTHUSIASTIC PRINCETONIAN and ardent golfer Joe Cass died Jan. 20, 1994, after a oneyear illness. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Mary; daughters Mary Mitchell and Patricia Landis; and two grandchildren. A son, Joseph IV, predeceased him. The son of Charles Cass '02, his uncle was Class of'I I and he had three Princeton cousins, including Joe Woodle '36. Joe prepared at Taft School and Valley Ranch School. At Princeton, he was a member of Court Club. He left us during sophomore year.

Joe was in the papermanufacturing business 'in the mills of his grandfather's West Vaco Co., and was also part owner and in sales and manufacturing for Casware, Inc., a company that made disposable paper and plastic dinnerware in WilkesBarre.

He spent almost five years in the army with the medics and in the European Theater with military government, earning three battle stars, before studying German at Rutgers in 1943 and being assigned as an interpreter abroad.

In 1971, he wrote, "A major reunion means, to me, mainly the opportunity to see as many of my classmates again, who are still around, and to feet that even though we do not see many of them for long times in-between, there is still a good comradeship existing within the class as a whole. Friends in life are necessary for one's good health and classmates are a big part of this."
