Joseph R. Morton ’22

Body

Joseph Morton died Nov. 19, 1994, at his home in Greensboro, N.C. Joe attended Princeton for one year during WWI, when he served in the Army, after studying in Davidson College for two years. His daughter says he remembered his time at Princeton very fondly. He attended some of our major reunions and contributed to Annual Giving campaigns.

Joe was born in Greensboro and, except for wartime service, he spent his entire life in North Carolina. He founded the Morton/Withers Chemical Co. in the early 1930s and retired after the company was acquired by Pfizer in 1958.

After retiring, he became a Renaissance man, painting, gourmet cooking, traveling, and investing. Joe was a benefactor of the Presbyterian Church Foundation and established a chair for chemistry at Davidson College. He enjoyed a very full and happy life.

Joe is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Marion Morton Brown; 13 grandchildren and step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. We extend our sympathies to his family.
