Joseph Ruff Gibson ’28

Body

JOE DIED Jan. 10, 1993, the day after his 87th birthday, in Haverford, Penn. His nephew, Julian Bullitt '65, said, "Joe had been back to Princeton for every reunion that I can remember. Even before I went to college, I remember Princeton being an important part of his life." Joe went

to Penn Charter School, and at Princeton he majored in English, ran on the cross country and track teams, and was a member of Terrace Club.

After graduation, Joe worked for an investment management firm for a few years, but for the remainder of his career he ran his own general insurance and bonding busincss in Philadelphia. He and his family lived in Swarthmore, with a summer place in Weston, Vt. Joe was active in civic and church affairs, the Community Arts Center, Red Cross branch, troop committee of the Boy Scouts, and the Men's Club of the Episcopal Church.

Joe married Elizabeth Tyler on June 30, 1934. They had three children, Elizabeth, Joseph H., and Frances, and six grandchildren. Joe's wife, Elizabeth, died Mar. 19, 1982. He and Frances Barnett were married Mar. 10, 1984. Her four children and Joe's three have known each other since childhood. Joe's Princeton relatives are two cousins, Robert C. McCabe '30, deceased, and Gibson McCabe '31, and nephew Julian Bullitt '65. One of Joe's granddaughters married Mark F Bernstein '83.

Joe was recently '28's successful Class Agent for Annual Giving. He always was a prime mover in the fun and laughter of Class reunions, and we will miss his genial participation in such happy occasions. The Class's deepest sympathy is with Frances and the members of his family.
