Josephat N. Karanja *62

Body

JOSEPHAT NJUGUNA KARANJA, former v.p. of Kenya, died of cancer in Nairobi Feb. 28, 1994. He was 63. Born Feb. 5, 1931, he was a member of the Kikuyu tribe. Josephat earned his bachelor's degree from Delhi Univ. and his M.A. from Atlanta Univ. before coming to Princeton to study history.

Josephat taught history at University College in Nairobi for a brief period and was then appointed to the position of high commissioner in the embassy of Kenya in London at age 32. After a very active and successful seven-year tenure in London, he returned to Nairobi to serve as the first vice-chancellor of the Univ. of Nairobi,

He first entered politics in 1979 and was elected to the Kenyan Parliament in 1986. Soon thereafter, the president appointed him to the vice-presidency. His tenure as v.p. was controversial in the extreme and he resigned. With the introduction of multiparty politics in 1991, he was reelected a member of Parliament.

He is survived by his widow, a son, and two daughters. To his family, we extend our sincere condolences.
