Body

KEN MITCHELL died after a heart attack Feb. 18, 1991, in Seattle. At his funeral on Feb, 22, a colleague described Ken as one "who lived at the boundary of his discipline (pastoral theology) and [was] a giant in his field."

Ken's cup of life did not merely overflow: it gushed, A premed student at Princeton, he decided on the ministry during his senior year, and entered Princeton Seminary. Ken received his Ph.D. from the Univ. of Chicago, and earned part of his keep playing studio organ for station WGN. He and Judith Bard were married on July 11, 1953. While completing his dissertation, Ken served as chaplain at Vanderbilt Univ. Hospital and taught at the Vanderbilt School of Theology and Vanderbilt Medical School, From 1965 to 1976, he was director of the division of religion and psychiatry at the Menninger Foundation. Between 1976 and 1985 Ken was dean of the Univ. of Dubuque School of Theology, and professor of pastoral care at Eden Theological Seminary, Webster Groves, Mo.

Ken loved languages as much as music. He could work in nine languages, and for his 60th birthday, he and Judy chartered a boat and sailed around Holland, with Ken translating and navigating.

To Judy and their children David, Susan, and Catherine, we offer our deepest sympathies.
