The Class of 1990 has belatedly learned that Kimberly Yvette Slaughter White, mother, scholar,
teacher, and writer, died Aug. 21, 2019, in her home, at the age of 51.
Born Nov. 4, 1967, in Norfolk, Va., Kimberly was the daughter of Gloria Bazemore and Julian
Slaughter. A proud graduate of Norfolk Academy’s Class of 1986, she joined the great Class of
1990, where she was a member of Butler College and served as a Minority Affairs Adviser,
mentoring those around her with warmth and insight.
Kimberly’s love of literature and language led her to earn a Ph.D. in 18th-century literature from
UCLA. Her passion for learning and teaching found its home at The Madeira School in McLean,
Va., where she was a beloved instructor.
Kimberly was predeceased by her brother, Kevin Slaughter. She survived by her three daughters,
Madison, Auguste, and Helen Lark; her mother, Gloria; her father, Julian; stepmother Oleathea;
sister Faith; her former husband, Eric; her dear friend, Don; as well as a loving extended family
of aunts, an uncle, cousins, friends, students, and colleagues who miss her and remember her
with gratitude and affection.
