Langeland Van Cleef ’41

Van died on Mar. 24, 1989, at the Hillcrest Hospital, in Canaan, N.Y. Although he spent most of his career in sales, he was an avid student of the stock market. He was a self-employed financial adviser at the time of his death.

Van came to Princeton from Culver Military Academy, majored in politics, and was a member of Tower Club and R.O.T.C. In July 1941, he entered the service, and after transferring to the Air Corps, he served on active duty until 1945, flying troops in C-47s during the invasions of North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Normandy, and Holland. He retired as a major in 1963.

Van was a serious bridge player and achieved the level of life master in the American Contract Bridge League. He also enjoyed swimming and built a 36' indoor pool into his house in Canaan; a 100' lake was on the grounds. For the last ten years of his life, he was a dedicated and active member of A.A.

Surviving him are his widow Lois, four daughters, three sons, one brother, and 16 grandchildren. The class extends its heartfelt condolences to them.
