Larry V. McIntire *70

Larry died in Stone Mountain, Ga., Jan. 23, 2026.

Larry was born June 28, 1943, in St. Paul, Minn. He earned his B.S. and M.A. in chemical engineering from Cornell and his Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Princeton in 1970.

He began his career at Rice in 1970 as an assistant professor and was eventually named the E.D. Butcher Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering. In 2003, he joined the Georgia Institute of Technology faculty as the Wallace H. Coulter Professor of Biomedical Engineering, holding a joint appointment with Emory University. At Georgia Tech, he greatly expanded the biomedical engineering department.

Larry’s research focused on biological transport phenomena and tissue engineering, particularly in the cardiovascular system, examining the dynamics of blood cells in the circulatory system and how fluid mechanical forces influence cellular metabolism and gene regulation. He fostered collaborative graduate education among Peking University, Georgia Tech, and Emory, and helped lay the groundwork for a joint Ph.D. program that strengthened scientific ties between the United States and China.

Predeceased by his wife, Suzie Eskin, Larry is survived by his sisters, Kay Lynn Dedrick and Marcia Lee; four nieces; one nephew; and seven great-nieces and nephews.
